In a heatwave, who to protect and how

Rickshaw pullers, construction workers, elders and children die first. Three signs of heatstroke, and one water point per neighbourhood.

Who is at risk People working in the sun (rickshaw, construction, hawking), the over-65s, children, the pregnant, and anyone with heart disease or diabetes.

Know heatstroke - Hot body but sweating has stopped - Confusion, slurred speech, fainting - Fast pulse, vomiting

This is an emergency. Shade, loosen clothes, wipe with wet cloth, cold water on the neck and armpits, water if conscious, and 999.

What a neighbourhood can do - A water point at the corner: a filter, some glasses, some shade. There is a template on this site. - Ask employers to stop outdoor work from noon to three. - One phone call a day to the elder who lives alone.

For yourself Light, loose clothes, head covered, water every hour, less tea, coffee and cold drinks; if your urine is yellow, drink more.
